The Tauern Cycle Path offers pure cycling pleasure between the imposing mountain peaks of the Salzburg region and the rolling hills of the Innviertel in Upper Austria and neighboring Bavaria. Enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the Hohe Tauern mountain range, take a refreshing dip in Lake Zell, and visit the sights of Salzburg, the city of Mozart, and Passau, the German-Austrian border town.

From the Hohe Tauern to the Mozart city of Salzburg

The starting point of the 270 or 320 km long cycle route are the famous Krimml Waterfalls in the Salzburger Land. With a fall height of 385 m are the highest waterfalls in Austria. Along the north side of the Hohe Tauern and the Salzach River, the individual stages of the well-developed Tauern Cycle Path lead continuously downriver through the Pinzgau, Pongau and Tennengau to the provincial capital of Salzburg.

Continue on the Inn cycle path to Passau

For the remainder of the journey along the Tauern Cycle Path, there are two options : The first option leads to Passau, the German city of three rivers, situated directly on the border with Austria. The Tauern Cycle Path route runs from Salzburg along the Austrian-German border, following the Salzach River through the Flachgau region and the Innviertel region of Upper Austria.

The Salzach River flows into the Inn River near Braunau in Upper Austria. From there, the Tauern Cycle Path follows the Inn Cycle Path to Passau. From the Upper Austrian town of Hochburg-Ach or the Bavarian town of Burghausen on the opposite bank, you can also cycle to Passau on the Bavarian side of the Salzach and Inn rivers. In Passau, you can continue your cycling tour on the Danube Cycle Path.

Shorter variant along the Saalach

The shorter version of the Tauern Cycle Path leads from Salzburg along the Saalach River through the Bavarian Berchtesgaden region back into the Pinzgau region to Lofer. Near Maishofen, the cycle route leaves the Saalach Valley and leads via Zell am See back into the Salzach Valley. Near Kaprun, the route rejoins its original course. The Tauern Cycle Path is very well signposted and mostly paved.
