ON THE ALPE-ADRIA CYCLING TRAIL FROM SALZBURG TO GRADO
Always towards the south: the fascinating alpine crossing
The Ciclovia Alpe-Adria-Radweg is an unforgettable experience. The cross-border cycle path with a total of 410 kilometers leads from Salzburg across the Alps to the Italian Adriatic Sea. Starting from the Mozart city of Salzburg, it goes through the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park in the sunny south to Villach in Carinthia. Soon you will cross the border with Italy and cycle partly on old railway lines through the beautiful, untouched Friulian Alps. Via Udine and the Roman cultural city of Aquilea, it finally goes to the sea, to the well-known seaside resort of Grado.

Salzburg - Bischofshofen / St. Johann i. Pongau, approx. 53 km
The first stage takes you on the Tauern Cycle Path along the Salzach via Hallein and Golling to the Lueg Pass, where an inn invites you to rest. At the mighty Hohenwerfen Fortress, it is worth taking a detour to the impressive Eisriesenwelt (allow approx. 4 hours). Then it goes on to Bischofshofen or St. Johann im Pongau.
Bischofshofen / St. Johann i. P. - Mallnitz, approx. 53 km
You cycle past Schwarzach along the Salzach to the junction in the Gastein Valley. After a climb you reach Dorfgastein and then the well-known health resort Bad Gastein. There you get on the train and comfortably cross the Tauern. When you arrive in Mallnitz in Carinthia, you cycle from the train station to your accommodation. Enjoy breathtaking views of Austria's highest mountains.
Mallnitz - Mühldorf / Sachsenburg, approx. 41 km
At a brisk ride you cycle through the wonderful mountains of the southern Tauern downhill to Obervellach and further on the Mölltal cycle path down the river to your today's destination - Mühldorf or Sachsenburg, where you reach the Drau cycle path.
Mühldorf / Sachsenburg - Villach, approx. 53 km
Today you cycle on the Drau Cycle Path to Villach. During a stopover in Spittal an der Drau, visit Porcia Castle, which is considered the most beautiful Renaissance building in Austria. It continues to Villach, the city with the southern flair.
Villach - Tarvis / Camporosso approx. 37 - 40 km
Following the river Gail you will soon say goodbye to Austria and greet Italy. The Canal Valley stretches across the border triangle between Italy, Austria and Slovenia, with the Italian border town of Tarvisio at its center. This is where the three major European language families and cultural areas - Teutons, Romans and Slavs - meet directly.
Tarvis / Camporosso - Moggio Udinese / Carnia, approx. 50-65 km
Cycling through the canal valley, the "Canale del Ferro", you can admire the beauty of the Friulian Alpine region with its intact, untouched nature and extensive forests. Discover Venzone, with its eventful history, best on a stroll through the old town.
Moggio Udinese / Carnia - Udine, approx. 50-60 km
The wine determines today's stage. Hills full of grapevines line your way and invite you to taste a drop or two. Udine, which is characterized by Venetian influences, exudes calm and prudence. With a coffee in the “piazza” or while strolling through the city center, you can admire important buildings from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.
Udine - Grado, approx. 55 - 60 km
Accompanied by the breeze of the Scirocco, you glide past reed landscapes and water canals and reach the historic fishing town of Grado, one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic, via the former Roman city of Aquileia.
Rest day at the sea or culture day in Aquileia
Today you have the choice: a cultural day in the footsteps of the Romans in Aquileia, the "second Rome", or a relaxing day by the sea, which you can enjoy in a deck chair on the kilometer-long beach of the Grado lagoon.
