DESCRIPTION:

The cross-border Ciclovia Alpe-Adria Cycle Route is an unforgettable experience. The first part of the tour leads from the Mozart city of Salzburg to Villach on the southern side of the Alps. From Salzburg, the route continues along the Salzach River on the Tauern Cycle Route via Bischofshofen through the magnificent Salzburg mountains to the Gastein Valley with the renowned spa town of Bad Gastein. There, you board the train and cross the Alps comfortably in just a few minutes. Arriving in Mallnitz, in the heart of Carinthia's Hohe Tauern National Park, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Austria's highest mountains. From here, you cycle steadily downhill and soon reach the Drau Cycle Route. The route continues to Villach, whose lively old town exudes a southern flair.

How to Arrive

Individual arrival in Salzburg and check-in at the hotel. The day is yours to explore the city of Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, and its many sights.

Salzburg - Bischofshofen/St. John, about 55-65 km

The first stage takes you along the Tauern Cycle Path along the Salzach River via Hallein and Golling to the Lueg Pass, where an inn invites you to rest. Passing the mighty Hohenwerfen Fortress, a detour to Werfen is worthwhile, visiting the fascinating Eisriesenwelt (Eisriesen World), the world's largest ice cave. In St. Johann im Pongau, the cathedral and the roaring Liechtenstein Gorge are impressive.

Bischofshofen/St. Johann - Bad Gastein - Mallnitz, approx. 60-50 km

Passing Schwarzach, you'll turn into the Gastein Valley, where you'll encounter some climbs (440 meters of elevation gain). Afterwards, treat yourself to a well-deserved rest and explore the renowned spa town of Bad Gastein before boarding the train for a comfortable journey across the Alps. Alternatively, you can take the train from Schwarzach or Bad Hofgastein.

Mallnitz - Sachsenburg/Spittal/Drau, approx. 30-40 km

In Mallnitz, Carinthia, within the Hohe Tauern National Park, you can enjoy stunning views of Austria's highest mountains. Cycle at a brisk pace through the magnificent mountain scenery of the southern Tauern range downhill to Obervellach. From there, continue downstream to your destination for the day – Sachsenburg or Spittal/Drau, where you will join the Drau Cycle Path.

Sachsenburg/Spittal/Drau - Villach, approx. 50-40 km

The Drau Cycle Path takes you along the mostly unspoiled banks of the river to Villach, which, with its charming old town, is a pleasant stroll. A stopover is worthwhile, including the Teurnia Roman Museum in Lendorf and Porcia Castle in Spittal an der Drau, considered Austria's most beautiful Renaissance building.
