Alpe-Adria bike tours despite tunnel closure in spring 2025
Full speed ahead on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path from July 14.07.2025, XNUMX
The Alpe-Adria cycle path is one of the most popular long-distance cycle routes in Europe and connects Salzburg with the Adriatic coast in GradoA special section is the effortless crossing of the Alps by rail, which takes place via the so-called Tauernschleuse between Bad Gastein and Mallnitz. Due to modernization work, this connection through the Tauern Tunnel will unfortunately be closed in spring 2025.
So that you can still enjoy your cycling experience on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path and the unique contrast between the Austrian Alps and the Italian sandy beach in May and June 2025, Kärnten Radreisen recommends the following alternatives.
The two Alpe Adria bike tours "From the Drava to the Adriatic" and from "Mallnitz to Trieste" are not affected by the construction work in the Tauern Tunnel and offer full Alpine-Adriatic feeling from May 03rd:
- From Mallnitz to Trieste: This 8-day cycling tour runs from Mallnitz in the Hohe Tauern National Park through the Mölltal and Drautal to Villach, then through the Italian Val Canale to the Adriatic Sea in Grado and further along the coast to the port town of Mallnitz. It combines impressive Alpine panoramas with the relaxed charm of the Mediterranean. More information: https://www.kaernten-radreisen.at/detail/alpe-adria-radtour-mallnitz-bis-triest/
- From the Drava to the Adriatic: This 8-day cycling tour starts in Oberdrauburg in the Drautal and combines varied mountain and river landscapes with Mediterranean flair. You cycle along the Drau and further on the Alpe-Adria cycle path to Grado, where the sea forms the perfect backdrop for the end of the tour. - Ab Villach All Alpe-Adria cycling tours, whether to Grado or Trieste, can be booked without restriction for the entire 2025 season. The 6-day trip from Villach to Grado is ideal for a “Taste of the Alps-Adriatic” and includes a day of relaxing on the sandy beach or visiting the Roman city of Aquileia. Individual bus shuttle for 4 people or more
Even during the closure of the Tauern Tunnel, a comfortable crossing of the Alps by bike is possible. For groups of four or more, Kärnten Radreisen organizes an individual bus shuttle including bikes and luggage between Bischofshofen and Spittal an der Drau. This means that there is no need to spend the night in Mallnitz and the trip is shortened by one night, but the cycling pleasure is undoubtedly retained.
Tauernschleuse to be fully operational again from July 14, 2025
The Tauern railway line between Schwarzach-St. Veit and Mallnitz will be extensively renovated up to and including July 13, 2025. From July 14, 2025, the route will be fully accessible again and cyclists will be able to cross the Hohe Tauern with their bikes in just 11 minutes using the so-called Tauernschleuse. The train tickets are included in all Kärnten Radreisen cycle tours from Salzburg.
